Adjustable Gastric Banding
Similarly to the gastric sleeve, the adjustable gastric banding procedure is also a laparoscopic surgery. A small silicone band is placed around the upper portion of a patient’s stomach. This creates a smaller pouch that allows a person to feel fuller with a smaller amount of food. The silicone band can be adjusted to be tighter or looser by accessing a port connected to the band. This port is placed under the skin on the patient’s abdomen. Adjustments to the band are performed in Dr. Birkedal’s office based on a patient’s weight loss and specific health needs.
Metabolic and bariatric surgery can lead to the improvement or resolution of various obesity related comorbid conditions. Several of these conditions include, but are not limited to, obstructive sleep apnea, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Additional outcomes will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with Dr. Birkedal.
